I recently purchased an Aston Chicken Coop which was flat packed and spent Saturday morning putting it together. If you are thinking to build a chicken coop, why not consider buying a pre-fabricated chicken coop kit for the same price as buying the materials to build your own? This will save you a lot of time and headache and you won’t have any hesitation in showing your friends the finished work. Here are some photos of me building the Aston chicken coop which was purchased from www.ChickenCoopDirect.com.au. They sell a variety of chicken coops with full assembly instructions which are simple to follow and the entire project took less than 30minutes to construct. Let me know what you think.

Rearing chickens is a great way to experience fun and adventure. There are a variety of chickens you can choose from to take care and raise. You can gain benefits such as good nutrition, income from selling, or just you just want to experience fun with your family raising chickens.

Various types are sold in markets now. One type is the pullet, a female type that starts laying eggs at 6 months of age. There are times that if they reach their 6th month age during the winter season, they may wait until spring to lay their eggs.

If you want to start now, important things must be considered. First is the coop. Your pets need to be housed in a dry coop for laying eggs and for enough rest. The coop can be made from wood, piece of materials, or any recycled things like doors. Online shops, as well as farm supply stores, are also selling coops. The pens are needed for your chickens to be kept safe from any dangerous attempts from stray cats and dogs, especially if you are out of the house for some time.

Next thing you must think of is the kind of chicken you are going to raise. Commercial egg layers are the ones that lay eggs almost everyday, and the sizes of the eggs are bigger than others. But some may also want to experience extra fun in the process of rearing so they opt for heirloom breeds, which are known for their varied colors and personalities. This type doesn’t produce eggs everyday, but when they do, they produce colorful ones, ranging from white to brown, and sometimes green to blue; pink is also seen in some.

As soon as everything is settles with protected hens inside a safe pen and backyard has been properly fenced, your hard work will definitely pay-off as you see eggs laid almost everyday. You will have to collect eggs several times a day and see to it that your hens don’t break any. Avoid washing the eggs for it has a thin protective layer covering it. But if it looks soiled, wash it with water.

Good supply is evident at home if you have egg laying hens present. They contribute good number of fresh eggs and meat to a healthy diet. Whether for fun, profit or good health, chickens are undeniably popular to many families worldwide.

I may have caught your attention when I said you can save more and benefit from raising chickens right at your own backyard, haven’t I? But why are you still not working on it? Perhaps, I can convince you more with these three tried and tested benefits.

Homegrown chickens will supply you fresh eggs and produce.

Chickens produce eggs, and you are assured of fresh eggs monthly when you raise your own chickens. Chickens are very much edible, when they grow up healthy, you are guaranteed fresh chicken meat at the dining table at all times! Isn’t it great to be supplying your family fresh eggs and produce constantly without even hurting your pocket? Eating fresh produce and fresh eggs will also do your family’ health some good, so imagine striking two birds with one hit!

You may enjoy these fresh products right from the source if you raise your own chickens from home. You will see the benefits and reap them as you go along.

Homegrown chickens will work for their upkeep.

Yes, you heard that right. Chickens will work for you, in the same vein that you spend for their upkeep and breeding. They will help you kill pests, worms, insects, and other harmful creatures easily as they peck around your backyard for food. They will feast on anything organic including undesirable grasses and dried leaves as they look for something to eat.

Anything that can ruin your lawn, well, leave it to the chickens! They will do work on your lawn including landscaping so you will not be bothered at all. Imagine your very own chickens doing the weeding and killing of pests for you? Pretty nifty, huh? You earn and at the same time enjoy its many benefits.

Homegrown chickens are very self sufficient.

Chickens unlike any other animals need not be trained, walked nor followed around. They can very well live by themselves provided they have ample food, water and a well-ventilated and spacious coop to shelter on. Considering all these benefits, where you can have fresh produce and eggs, maintain a good lawn free from pests and weeds, you can also start earning a livelihood from your homegrown chickens. Are these reasons enough for you to get started?

A chicken coop is a place especially designed for hens, where they can find comfort, rest, and lay their eggs. Hens must be able to be in a sheltered area as soon as they begin to lose their “fluff,” as chicks and start growing feathers.

If you raise chickens on a farm or in your own backyard, it is important to know how to build a chicken coop so that your hens have somewhere to go. When deciding on a plan for your coop, be sure that it will have an entrance hole and proper ventilation for the hens to get air. This also helps to keep moisture at a minimum, preventing mold and certain smells from spreading.

Easy access for yourself is also important, since someone needs to be able to get in and clean the coop and check on the chickens and eggs inside. The floor of the chicken coop should allow for enough flooring, or litter, to cover it well. Pine chips or shavings tend to work well, and provide a way to absorb extra moisture.

When coming up with a location for the coop, be sure it is somewhere at a higher elevation, and make sure that water can drain out of it easily. Determine the size of your chicken coop, as well as the floor plan.

When looking into how to build a chicken coop, you can designate separate rooms if you like, but one central place for the hens to dwell should work just fine. Measure the coop, and determine where it will be placed on your property. The walls can be wood, but insulate them if possible so the chickens can stay warm during the winter months.

Simple house insulation should work fine, as long as the walls are built well enough that the chickens do not peck at them so they can get to the insulation inside. Blueprints and plans for chicken coops can be found online, or in the local library.

Some chicken coops have a little ladder inside that extends out of the roof. This allows the hens to simply climb the ladder to the top and then fly out. It works well as long as the hole where the ladder is located remains sheltered from the elements.

Mesh wire works well as a substitute for some of the solid walls. There are many great resources that can fill you in on how to build a chicken coop, so do a bit of research, and then decide which plan and materials will work best for you and your chickens’ needs.

If you desire, you can also paint the coop red to give it a nice farm like look. An overhang roof is a great idea since it provides shelter for hens who may be outside and need a place of shade or refuge. The possibilities are endless and can provide hours of fun during the building process, and many years of shelter and a home for your chickens to enjoy.
